Executive Director’s Report:
NumFOCUS Summit dates and location have been confirmed: We’ll be at Microsoft in NYC from November 2-3.
NumFOCUS recently had its third project-staff call. Highlights of the most recent call included Summit Logistics, setting up a European NumFOCUS shop for NF merchandise, and creating PEX cards for projects, which would provide projects prepaid cards to make purchases as an alternative to borrowing the NF credit card.
Discussion Items:
a. PSL update
James, Katrina, and Leah had a call with PSL to gain additional
information about the project and its degree of openness. PSL shared a
list of contributors and users that is not publicly visible on GitHub.
We may wish to revisit our decision to reject PSL as a fiscally
sponsored project in light of new information. We still have concerns
about the degree of openness of the project; while we now understand that
the project is much larger and more impactful than we originally
believed, much of that information is not easily accessible.
b. Clawpack Affiliated Project Application:
Clawpack, the "Conservation Laws Package", has applied for Affiliated
Project status. Lorena will champion the project/review the application
before our next meeting.
c. Updates on ongoing efforts
i. NumFOCUS education platform
Efforts to push forward a platform to teach NumFOCUS tools to new
users are effectively on hold because of a lack of manpower. Andy
had been championing the platform prior to returning to volunteer
status.
ii. Preferred Provider Agreement
We are moving forward with setting up our first Preferred Provider
Agreement with Quansight.
d. JetBrain sponsorship
We are in dialogue with JetBrain, a software company whose products are
used by multiple NumFOCUS projects, about an offer from them to provide
NumFOCUS projects with free licenses.
